Abstract

At a glance

Fusion energy progress is often framed through individual technical milestones. This perspective proposes a broader readiness view that connects plasma science, engineering systems, regulation, and policy to better understand the path from experiment to dependable energy infrastructure.

Beyond a single physics milestone

A successful plasma experiment is essential, but commercial readiness depends on many systems advancing together. Materials, tritium handling, maintenance, thermal conversion, and supply chains all shape the practical outcome.

Treating one breakthrough as a proxy for the whole system can hide the work between scientific feasibility and dependable operation.

Readiness as a connected system

A stronger readiness framework maps dependencies and exposes which components must mature in sequence. It also distinguishes laboratory evidence from integrated engineering evidence.

This system view can guide investment toward bottlenecks rather than toward the most visible technical achievement.

Connecting engineering and policy

Licensing, workforce, public infrastructure, and market design will influence deployment long before a first commercial plant operates.

Shared milestones across research, industry, and policy can make progress easier to evaluate and communicate without oversimplifying uncertainty.
